Yon solitary highland lass!
Reaping and singing by herself;
Stop here,or gently pass!
Alone sings a melancholy strain;
O listen! For the vale profound,
Is overflowing with the sound.

Stanza two
No nightingale did ever chant
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travelers in some shady haunts,
Among Arabian sands;
A voice so thrilling ne’er was heard
In spring time from the cuckoo bird
breaking the silence of the sea
among the farthest Hebrides.
Paraphrase:
The girl’s voice is sweeter than the nightingale that welcomes the exhausted travllers when they reached a shady place also her voice is sweeter than the cuckoo bird that announces the coming of the spring.
Stanza three
Will no one tell me what she sings?
Perhaps the plaintive number flow
For old,unhappy,far off things,
And battles long ago:
Or is it some more humble lay,
Famillar matter of today?
Some natural sorrow,loss,or pain,
That has been ,and may be again?

paraphrase:
  The poet doesn’t understand the girl’s song but he thought it was a sad song about ancient tragdies or battles or a simple song refers to the sadness or pain in our world.
Stanza four
Whatever the theme, the maiden sang
As her song could have no ending
L saw her singing at her work
And o’er the sickle bending
I listen’d motionless and still;
And ,as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more.
paraphrase:

   Although the poet didn’t understand the girl’s song he kept listening her with no move and remained in his heart.
